“I’m getting my stuff,” she reached her desk and slung her bag over her shoulder, “and going to the police.”

He continued pacing her to the elevators. “I’m new, so I sure don’t know everything, and I don’t mean to interrupt at all, but, you know… sure that’s such a bright idea?”

She stopped.

There. His personality changed between one goofy line and the next one, deadly serious.

“Um, yeah.” She stepped into the elevator waiting area, automatically triggering the building to send an elevator. “That’s what any normal person would do. Do you think I should do something else?”

The elevator doors slid open.

He eased a muscular arm across the entrance, blocking her way.

She stopped and met his eye.

Once again, his blond hair fell across his brow, half cloaking his eyes. The goofy persona was gone. He stared at her intently, lethally serious.

Something stirred in her belly. Another curl, like when she had first met him, of danger and desire.

“You should go home,” he said, quiet and slow, and his voice was soft and reminded her of licking the curve of her spoon to get the last taste of sweet cream. “Do what you promised Mr. Heeler and forget you saw anything here tonight. In fact, don’t come in tomorrow either. Take a long vacation off planet. Leave tonight.”

“Why should I?”

“It’s dangerous.”

Her belly shivered. Fear and excitement. She had never felt so alive.

“You’re the dangerous one,” she countered.

A sardonic light entered his eyes as though he couldn’t disagree with her. “It takes a lot of power to put someone like that in a position like this. Power that might be used to silence an employee who starts unsettling rumors with law enforcement.”

“But he’s going to do something bad,” she insisted.

“He’s already done it,” he said, “and everything’s going to be different soon anyway. You should worry about yourself.”

“I am.” She put her hand on his arm. It felt unmovable as iron. She wanted him wrapped around her body now, shoving her up against a wall. “If I’m in such danger, maybe you should escort me home.”

Surprise changed to sizzling hot, deadly interest.

A rough smile curved his lips. “I don’t know what you think I am, but I am not one of the good guys.”

“Why not?”

He hesitated and did not answer.

“Come home with me.”

His expression softened, like his voice, to both become more dangerous and more amused. “Home with you is the absolute last place I should be.”

But the way he said it, with that devilish smile, suggested delicious possibilities she only wished she could explore. He would taste way better than a glass of wine.

Disappointment twinged. “Give me a reason or give me a kiss.”

For one long moment, he looked like he was going to give her a reason. The moment stretched. His expression darkened, hot and sexy, and her stomach flipped. Sweet tingling desires shimmered through her.

He tugged her into his arms.

Once more, her body molded to his molten-hot chest. Her nipples stood in sharp relief against his strength and her thighs memorized his rock-hard quads. She clung to his rippling back, feeling the contour of his powerful shoulder blades. His masculine scent enveloped her with heat and desire.

She lifted her lips.

He lowered and brushed them with his own.

The world stood still.

She lived in the sensation. So brief, so delicious, his lips gently pressed against hers. Once, twice, three times.

The third time, his mouth opened and met hers. Desire seared through her, curling in her center with a tug. She murmured his name.

He pressed her against the wall.

She opened to him, and their tongues tangled. Wetness charged with electricity. She consumed his delicious taste, every stroke of his hot tongue another stroke of her aching desire. He intoxicated her, and she wanted to crack open the whole bottle.

His knee fit between her legs. She squeezed him, her aching feminine center seeking the key that fit her hot, wet lock. His masculinity rubbed hard against her upper thigh, seeking the same in her.

And then, he pushed himself off the wall and rested his forehead against hers. His eyes, so intent, seemed to shift colors, gleaming green and silver in the low light. “Good enough?”

She licked her lips. “Not even.”

His smile warmed her heart. Long, slow and hungry, it made promises she needed him to keep.

“The intergalactic criminal rogue has driven robots insane,” she said, her head still pressed against the wall. “An insane robot is a danger to everyone. Give me her location to capture the criminal before more are hurt.”

“Nice words. But you’re here to kill me.”

“Not right now.”

A brow raised. He winced and touched the bloodied scratch.

“You don’t believe me,” she said.

“I’ve always had a weakness for pretty girls.”

Somehow, this tossed-off compliment affected her more deeply than his declaration of her beauty. “Pretty” sounded closer to truth. The realization burned through her like the flickering of a match, burning into her center and stealing her breath. He thought she was pretty, and she liked him for thinking so. Danger. Danger. The word chanted in her head.

Be pretty. Use his weakness to extract information. Your untrained human persona is perfect for this chore.

“I am not a pretty girl,” she said, deliberately crushing her robot’s new idea. “And I’m not the organizer of the attempt to assassinate you just now.”

His non-reaction said he was already aware. “That doesn’t mean I’m safe around you, Zenya.”

He paused.

She bit back the argument forming in her robot’s processor. When she finished her training in the Faction, she would accept her predecessor’s name and become the new Zenya. Fine. But she had not finished her training, and she refused her predecessor’s name.

“My name is Resa.”

Skepticism sealed his brow.

“Since you know about my predecessor, then you also know I could have killed you at any time simply by not acting. Instead, I have saved your life.”

He licked his lips. “Because you need me.”

The way he said those words, the way he moved and gestured, evoked all sorts of wrong ideas. Darts of pleasure, darts of need, digging under her skin. She didn’t need him. She didn’t need anything about him.

“That irritates you,” he observed.

She dropped all emotion from her body, squeezing it out like a liquid until nothing but the robot remained. And still, she felt like he could see her. See the empty shell, know that it was empty, and sense a challenge to fill it up again. “I don’t need anything.”

“Sure.” He squared his jaw. “The lady rogue knows you’re coming. The only way you could possibly hope to catch her is to stay close to me. I’ll let you stay as close as you like. For a price.”

Pay it, her robot ordered.

She shivered. “You do have a death wish.”

“So what?”

“Are you going to kill me?”

How interesting that he drew a distinction between her assignment and her intention. “Why do you think I will tell you the truth?”

“Because I already know the truth.” He coughed. “I’m testing to see whether you’re going to bother to lie.”

“Every time I kiss you, I feel sensations.”

“What kinds of sensations?”

The skin between his dark eyebrows wrinkled. “I don’t know. Not normal. Aberrant.”

Well, okay. Aberrant. Great.

“That’s why you have to help me control this obsession,” he said, “by giving in.”

“Oh, sure. Let me get out the electro-welder again, since having me operate on you went so well last time.”

“You should want me to reprogram myself. Refusing means you’re illogical.”

“I’m illogical?” She pulled free. “You’re making out with a girl who gives you aberrant thoughts. But why is that surprising? You’re an asexual robot.”

Her accusation echoed across the garbage chamber.

The frown returned. “Yes, exactly.”

He smacked his chest so hard she feared it would leave a dented handprint. “I’m an asexual robot. So what the hell am I trying to do with you?”

“I don’t know!”

“Neither do I!” His voice rose like shouting. “I shouldn’t be interested in this. In you. Instead I find myself compelled to reach out, to touch, to do things I should have no reason to want to do. And I can’t stop myself. You’re in front of me and I lose all control.”

His words licked her body with dangerous gasoline. She rubbed her arms. “Stop.”

“I can’t. Not on my own. That’s why I need your help.” He gazed at her, helpless. “I am drunk on you.”

His words lit her on fire.

She sucked in a breath. “What do you mean?”

“Every touch is like a shot of diamond-clarified vodka. Every new sensation hits me with a reward shower that I can’t control. Every texture of your skin against mine slows me down until I am literally overloaded. I am stuck in your gravity well, and time has dilated beyond all sense of meaning, and I’m simply chasing the next hit of feeling, the next taste of you, the next breath, the next gasp, the next flutter of your eyelashes, the next pulse of heat beneath your skin. You’re pouring a distillery over my head, and I’ve opened my arms to embrace it, and I’m intoxicated. I’m drunk to death.” His voice broke. “On you.”

“So the only reason you’re not trying to kill me right now is because that rogue woman stopped you less than fifty feet from my bedroom and installed another program?”

He nodded.

“Then what if you get reconnected to the network? Suddenly you want to kill me again?”

“Or what if she installed a program that executes on a delay?” She heard her voice rising, but the cold seeping into her bones caused such a trembling she felt like she was under the overpass all over again, staring at the sudden shock of metal just after she had thought he was safe. “You’re like a grenade that could go off at any time! How can you sit here like nothing is wrong?”

“Are you going to run?” he asked quietly.

She realized that she’d already taken several steps away. She wavered, the historical instinct to run fighting the impulse to trust, just a little longer, that it was all a mistake. That there was something more. She retraced her steps until she was standing before him. “No.”

His jaw clenched. “I’m sorry.”

“Just explain so I can feel safe again,” she said. “Are you not a grenade?”

He scratched his head, a rueful smile curving his lips. “Honestly? I don’t know.”

She hugged herself. “That doesn’t make me feel better.”

He flashed to her and sobered. “I don’t know who installed the other program, so I don’t know her intentions. I don’t even know if she’s human. The Faction will deconstruct the code when they disassemble me completely.”

She swallowed. “Disassemble?”

“That is the usual consequence for an android that goes off assignment.”

She knelt at his feet. “But it wasn’t your fault.”

His brows drew together. “What does fault have to do with anything?”

She sat back on her heels.

“I don’t really care either way.” He cupped the back of his neck. “It’s not like I have a biological imperative forcing me to stay alive and transmit my genes. Up until a day ago, I, like all of my brethren, had only one imperative: to enact the will of the Faction. And now…”

He released his hold and filled his eyes with her. His expression changed to awe, almost pleading, and his voice turned raw, as if she could answer his questions.

“What is it about you that makes me so fucking compelled to hold you?”

His question stole her breath.

He shook his head. “Even now, when you distrust and fear me, I just want to yank you into my arms and squeeze you until your eyes glaze with pleasure and your breath comes in gasps. It’s not an assignment. It’s not the will of the Faction. I just want you. I want to memorize every single molecule, from the inside to the outside, from the chemical bond to the neuro-physical configuration, so that I could be your resurrect if you needed it.” He smacked his arms. “It feels like burning under my skin, but when I query my dermal receptors, they report nothing but ambient temperature. I don’t understand these sensations. I need you.”

The words set her on fire. He was as lost and confused by these feelings as she was, and he would suffer just as greatly if the Robotics Faction caught them. Android and human, they were the same.

And he wanted her. Just like she wanted him.

Her body throbbed.

He stared at his hands. Then, he opened them wide, as though he were attempting to release his feelings for her. He frowned at the open palms and closed his hands again.

She shifted closer. “So, even now, you want to touch me?”

He focused on her. “Even now.”

She licked her lips. “And you can’t control it?”

“It’s pulsing in my hands, under my skin, in my cock. But”—he took a deep breath—“I promise to keep my distance. More than any desire of mine, I want only to give you pleasure.”

She was having trouble thinking. Her body pulsed on its own rhythm. “Physical pleasure?”

His fingers whispered across her cheekbones. “Every kind.”

Reviews:Lauren Roux on Goodreads wrote:

I loved this novel! And I can’t wait for the next in this series. I’m a big fan of science fiction romance (there is never enough of this stuff to go around), and I was glad to see a new series pop out on the market.

This book felt like a new take on the Terminator series set in the future with more romance thrown in…This action packed book takes the reader on a wild ride of action, romance, and more action while this duo work together in order to try and keep Cressida alive.

Reader wrote:

I love the premise of your story and thoroughly enjoyed seeing how your characters overcame all the odds and found their HEA. 🙂 It’s a great beginning to a series, too. Lots of resolution but several threads left open to resolve later
